Lucy Girolamo migrated from Cuba at eight years old with her parents and two sisters. She attended school in Miami for one year in a Bilingual classroom setting. Then, her family moved to the Chicago suburbs, where they settled in. They embraced the new, rich, American culture while maintaining their cherished traditions. Learning the English language and academic content was a struggle, but she persevered.
After high school, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. She continued her education and received her Master of Arts in Teaching from Aurora University in Illinois along with an English Language Learner endorsement. This endorsement would qualify her to help other English Language Learners advance in their education and achieve success. She continued her training and received her endorsement in Special Education. Her passion is to teach her students to love reading and master the art of writing. Through her writing, she aims to educate and inspire others.
The social injustice in Cuba was a consistent topic of interest in her household. She decided to write the powerful story of her father’s fight against the Castro regime. Lucy felt compelled to educate society about the importance of a democratic government and social justice.
With the support of her husband and three children, she advocates for individuals with disabilities, social justice, and her students.
